Digital Twins - Game Changing Technology?

Writer: ckovolenkockovolenko

In our industry, we recognize the value of BIM (Building Information Modeling) software to help design and construct a building, while digital twin technology can help maintain and operate that building.

Digital twins help buildings operate more efficiently by helping predict and avoid unexpected costs, identify system inefficiencies, and better estimate when replacement parts are needed.

To create a digital twin of an asset, engineers first build a detailed model and then pair it with data, including inspection and sensor data. This information is then fed into the model to create a digital twin.

Digital twins in construction are created by combining several types of data into a single platform, including 3D models, sensor data, and real-time performance data.

Note that setting up a digital twin platform can be capital-intensive, especially for small to medium-sized enterprises. Plus the construction industry might face not having professionals who are trained to work with advanced digital twin platforms. As with any technology the digital twin is only as good as the data fed into it.

Digital twin technology has been used on large projects around the world. Michael Grieves is credited with first applying the concept of digital twins to manufacturing in 2002 and formally announcing the digital twin software concept. Eventually, NASA's John Vickers introduced a new term—“digital twin”—in 2010.

The global digital twin market is projected to grow from USD 17.73 billion in 2024 to USD 259.32 billion by 2032.

It's clear that digital twin technology will continue to play a critical role in the construction industry. With the increasing adoption of BIM, the growing use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and the availability of data, the potential for digital twin technology in construction is limitless.
