Construction Trends Are Mixed

Writer: ckovolenkockovolenko

As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2024, project bids are changing. Quote requests for new projects are including rehab projects, and more than we have seen in the past.

New construction bids cover a range of commercial projects, and we continue to focus on municipal structures, manufacturing structures, and warehouse facilities.

On the rehab side: Buildings can undergo a transformative renovation when it is stripped down to its core and rebuilt, resulting in a brand-new structure. Or additions of mezzanines and canopy sections to connect buildings add to building use flexibility. The outcome can be sustainable and innovative.

For rehab projects we are seeing, it tends to be a section of a building’s exterior or a wall. These type of projects are heavy on labor. The challenge will be workforce shortages which remain an issue. Over 40% of construction professionals plan to retire by 2031, according to the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

In addition, activity is increasing for structural steel component orders. We offer custom frames, components, parts, and accessories, and we can fabricate them to order with a quick turnaround.

Regardless of the type of project, we are sensing a new sense of efficiency for how things could be done. We are finding new ways to reduce wastefulness in many of the traditional design-construction delivery methods/processes. We now have tools at our fingertips to help us collaborate, learn, adapt, and achieve a better decision making, less waste during the design process, and higher efficiency as it relates to building assembly.
